Naked runner

Teen prankster caught as Lodi police chase 3 theft suspects

A recent Lodi High School graduate trying to pull a final prank by running naked through a Lodi park ended up being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The teen, who is heading off to college soon, was arrested Tuesday night after police pursued three suspected car thieves into Peterson Park.

A police dog found the young prankster, nude and trying to hide in a backyard.

Police ultimately arrested three people, including the 18-year-old, Grafton Prewitt, of Lockeford.

In the confusion, one of the car theft suspects got away.

The incident started around 11:30 p.m. when officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the 300 block of Chestnut Street, Lt. Chet Somera said.

The driver led officers on a pursuit, heading west on Elm Street to Peterson Park, past Lower Sacramento Road.

All three men ran in different directions and officers soon captured one suspect, Jason James Cinotti, 23, of Lodi.

A short time later, retired officer Chuck Fromm, who lives in the area, helped subdue a second suspect. That man, Jason Howard Hughes, also 23, of Lodi, is a parolee.

Police also arrested the nude Prewett in the same yard where Hughes had been hiding.

Prewett had gone to the park with a friend, who dropped him off and planned to pick him up on the other end of the park after he had finished streaking, Somera said.

The police activity interrupted that plan, and Prewett was arrested after a police dog found him hiding.

Like Hughes, he was arrested on suspicion of prowling, but also on suspicion of indecent exposure.

Only after officers had called off their search because they had three people in custody did they learn that Prewett was not connected to the car chase.

Prewett has no adult record and played on the golf team at Lodi High. But if prosecutors charge him with indecent exposure and he is convicted, he would be required to register for life as a sex offender.

Prosecutors had not filed any charges in the case by the end of Wednesday, and Prewett could not be reached for comment.

As for the other suspects, court records show Cinotti has a number of previous convictions, including residential robbery, escape from jail, possession of a switchblade knife and possessing a firearm. He was also scheduled to appear in court today on a charge of possessing a controlled substance.

Since 2002, Hughes has pleaded guilty to stealing cars in three separate cases, as well as commercial burglary, possession of a controlled substance and being a felon in possession of ammunition.

The alleged 19-year-old driver who escaped also has multiple convictions, including a warrant because he didn't show up to jail to serve a six-month sentence after pleading guilty in July to attempted residential burglary.

Police believe he has run from officers three times in recent days, including the previous night.

Officers found two stolen catalytic converters in the vehicle from which the suspects fled near the park.

One is a case in where a 34-year-old man had sex with an underage student in his charge... the other is this case where a good kid...(his record shows it to be so)...that ran nude in the park at midnight when no one was around but his buddy, the one that dared him to do so. I think there is a HUGE difference there. If you can't see that then you have some serious issues to sort out as there is no comparison whatsoever. "

" OMG! He would have to register as a sex offender? 11:30 at night? Did anyone even see him? (Besides the officers?) If not, exactly who did he expose himself to? I think it would be shame if this young man, misquided but not a criminal, would be required to register as a sex offender. Let's hope commen sense prevails... "

" Here is a prime example of "why youshould not act like an idiot"! The streaker is an idiot, probably coaxed by a dare. The thieves, with their extensive records, should get the book thrown at them. They are probably meth heads out "working" to support their habits. Hopefully they will meet a REAL special cellmate, and enjoy their incarceration!! "

" Too Funny!! If the cops forgot, I hope the DA remembers that Indecent Exposure requires a sexual component. As long as Grafton Prewitt was only streaking and not masturbating that component is probably lacking. There are a string of "mere nudity" appellate cases and if that's what you have, there is no crime unless he was tresspassing or in a park after hours.. But Grafton will NEVER forget his little misadventure or the newspaper coverage his arrest got him. "

" Like the article says, Prewett was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hope the DA gives him a break and lets this thing go by not pressing charges - the kid was just blowing off some harmless steam given the time of night he chose to streak. I'd be more concerned if he did it in broad daylight when the park was full of kids; but at midnight???? "

" Life as a sex offender for streaking? What in the world has happened with our justice system? Hopefully the DA and the judge have some common sense and the kid has do some community service. Register as a sex offender should be reserved for actual sex offenders not for a kid acting like an idiot...... "

" What a dumb A$$. Because of his stupid "prank" a guy wanted by the police, not just that night but apparently on a crime spree, got away. Nice job Mr Prewett. I hope they throw the book at you. I live in the area and it pisses me off that someone dangerous, and obviously deperate, was on the prowl while my family and I slept. Thanks stupid. "
