A speeding 50-year-old Galt man died Tuesday after he lost control of a stolen motorcycle and landed in a ditch off Walnut Grove Road near Staten Island Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Witnesses said the man was traveling west at more than 100 mph on a black 2007 Yamaha RS when he reached a curve, said CHP spokesman Adrian Quintero. The man couldn't control the motorcycle and went off the north shoulder, where he was thrown off the bike.

The man, whose name was not released pending notification of family, was wearing a helmet, Quintero said.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene just east of the Sacramento County line, but then canceled when the man was pronounced dead.

There was no immediate indication of alcohol or drug involvement, but investigators will wait for toxicology test results, Quintero said.

Hours earlier, the motorcycle had been reported stolen in Davis.

The motorcycle had been involved in a traffic collision, and the owner put it in the bed of his pick-up truck. It was stolen sometime between 2 and 9 a.m., the owner told Davis police.
