There's a portion of the Delta that many don't see. It's not on Highway 12 or 160, where most of the Delta towns like Rio Vista, Isleton, Walnut Grove and Locke are found.
It's the much quieter area stretching along the Delta Loop, a road that winds along the Mokelumne and San Joaquin rivers south of Highway 12, between Terminous and Rio Vista.
"A lot of people go by and don't know it's here," said Bart Williams, who owns the Happy Harbor and Marina with his father.
Nevertheless, it's busy on weekends, he said.
The Delta Loop is a 10-mile drive along high levee roads. The route takes travelers through lush farmland and along two rivers. The scenery includes a dramatic view of Mt. Diablo and wildlife.
The loop starts about 25 minutes from downtown Lodi. Go about 10 miles west of Interstate 5 on Highway 12 until you reach the Mokelumne River draw bridge.
Look for the B&W Resort sign on the north side of Highway 12 and turn right at Brannan Island Road; there will be a Delta Loop sign there.
The road winds under Highway 12 and heads south. That's when it really gets peaceful.
As you go south from Highway 12, you will see some boat docks along the Mokelumne to your left and farmland to the right.
A short time later, you see some RV parks, restaurants, bars and gift shops. Because of their popularity on weekends, many shops and restaurants are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The Delta Loop has more than 20 waterside resorts, where you can fish, boat and, in some areas, swim, play tennis or go dancing.
As Brannan Island Road winds west along the San Joaquin River, you will see homes on the right, many of them on tall stilts to keep them dry in case of flooding.
The road winds northwest along the San Joaquin River past a few more marinas, then turns right onto Jackson Slough Road, which takes you back to Highway 12.
If you miss Jackson Slough Road, you will end up onto Twitchell Island and eventually end up on Highway 160, south of Rio Vista. Then you can go north on Highway 160 back to Highway 12.
The area receives many visitors during the Delta Loop Fest, which is held the first weekend of May each year.
Events include food, wine tasting, live music, a horseshoe tournament, bikini contest, children's activities, flea markets, white elephant sales, boat displays, fishing seminars and raffles. For more information, call (916) 777-6161.
