Second Hand Rose a store of collectibles

When it comes to antiques at one Lodi shop, if you see what you want, you have to buy it fast.

This is the case at Second Hand Rose, a longtime Lodi antique store on School Street, said owner Christina Hoffman. She added that a $1,000 bedroom set displayed in the window sold within a week. The most common sellers there are dressers and armoires.

More than 40 antique dealers have booths in the store, which spans two floors. The dealers each have their specialities, such as dinettes or French items.

The store is filled with an eclectic mix of treasures including sets of plates, tea pots of all shapes and sizes, sake cups, jewelry, Barbies, paintings and more. You might find items that remind you of things in your grandmother's home.

"We get new stuff every day," Hoffman said.

She said the most unique item in the store is a Civil War-era buffet.

The store has been around for 12 years and first opened in a location on Cherokee Lane. Hoffman worked there and bought the store about 11 years ago. It moved to its current location in 2000, after downtown Lodi was revitalized.

"I like the people," Hoffman said.

To her, one of the appeals of antiques is that the furniture was made better in the past than today.

"Back then, there was a real art to making furniture," she said.

Amy and Rich Lawery have had a booth at Second Hand Rose since January.

"We love it," they said. "It's a lot of fun and a lot of work. We're learning a lot. Chris and her husband are great to work with and they're knowledgeable."

The Lawerys got into selling antiques because they had been collecting for many years. Their booth is downstairs, where there is a hodgepodge of items.

On a recent afternoon, shoppers could find a Goofy telephone with an old-fashioned receiver on top, Little Debbie (snack cake) Barbies and a Humpty Dumpty teapot.

Other character and commercial memorabilia can be found as well. Statues, cookie jars, glass of all kinds, pillows, old kitchen items and more are there every day. And there are new items all the time, Hoffman said.

Visitors to the store are sure to find some sort of surprise, an unexpected treasure. But the item they want could go fast.
